Listen To Your GUT

GUTOver the last couple of weeks, I have been talking to friends concerning their relationships, jobs, next steps in life, and more. When most of them speak about negative experiences they have encountered, they all say the same thing: “I had this feeling that something was not right.” My next question to them is, “Why didn’t you listen?” Dealing with people or situations as an adult, I have realized one thing: my gut feeling (or instinct) has never been wrong. Wikipedia defines gut feeling as “a visceral emotional reaction to something. It may be negative, such as a feeling of uneasiness, or positive, such as a feeling of trust. Gut feelings are generally regarded as not modulated by conscious thought, and as a reflection of intuition rather than rationality.

Most of us want to assume the best of everyone; the mate, friend, coworker, and family member. Some of us are too busy talking and trying to connect with others when we should just be smiling, nodding and listening while others speak. Always looking for a mate or a new hanging buddy, or just trying to fit into social circles, we often conform instead of being who we are. When we are too busy talking (trying to fit in), we miss the “red flags” or ignore our “gut” feelings when it pertains to people or situations.

Recently, I was having a rest and relaxation weekend that included watching shows on my DVR, napping, listening to my nature music, praying, meditating, reading and writing. One of the greatest lessons I have learned in those moments is that it is essential for me to have a healthy mind and spirit. It is in these moments that I become one with my gut feelings and things start coming into perspective. If we are not still long enough we will never be able to connect with our gut/instincts, to know when to listen, stay or walk away from people and situations.

Never feel bad about taking some time to relax and spend time with you. The only way to become the best you is to cultivate and spend time with you. So the next time you get that gut feeling you will know what it is and listen to it. Trust me, it is well worth it!!

Always trust your first gut instincts. If you feel it in your heart and soul that something is wrong it probably is!
